Over the year, dead roots, grass cuttings, leaf litter and other organic matter form a layer of thatch which forms at the base of the grass stems. As this increases in thickness, it holds back light, air, water and nutrients, from reaching the root zone. This creates the perfect environment for moss to flourish.

The best way to treat the problem is to tackle both the cause and symptoms. Standish Property Maintenance Can kill the existing moss then remove it and  the build up of thatch in your lawn . Scarification is the mechanical process of removing surface thatch from a lawn. It should not be confused with lawn raking using either a spring tine rake or an electric machine with hook line tines. Rakes and domestic machines are relatively good at removing dead moss, but they have little or no effect on surface thatch.

Aeration is the process of using equipment to either puncture the soil with spikes. Aeration may be overlooked when trying to restore a lawn but is vital to bring it back to health. It improves drainage and reduces puddle formation.

Spike aeration involves the use of an aeration machine with spikes up to a foot or more in length. It is sometimes used to address drainage issues in areas with turf, improving the infiltration of water/nutrients, and creating an environment where grass seed can have direct contact with the soil.
